Unlike many other cities in Croatia Opatija is a very young one. Its notable beginning was in the middle of the 19th century. The expansion began when the railway was built connecting the region to the then capital Vienna. That made possible for the development of hotels, which made Opatija famous for. Some of them are still opened today.

Today Opatija is a resort well known for its various hotels, seaside promenade (built over a century ago and kilometers long) and fantastic restaurants considered one the best in Croatia.
