Town Bol

Airport and transport – a catamaran and hydrofoil boat (from Bol) and a ferry (from Supetar) to Split (around 15 km) and Makarska (around 10 km); Airport Brac (7 km); regular bus connections between all the villages of the island.

History – (see Island Brač); archaeological findings from the Paleolithic; the oldest town on the coast of Brac; name Bol is first mentioned in 13th century in the manuscript Povaljske listine (the oldest preserved document written in Croatian Cyrillic on Croatian language); there was a shipyard in Bol in 17th century; in 18th century Brac was the third navigational center on the Croatian Adriatic and Bol was the island’s leader; beginnings of organized tourism started in 1923 (Bol had, before the WWII the biggest accommodation capacities (63 rooms i.e. 127 beds) and the best occupancy rate).

Interesting to see: remains of a Roman Villa Rustica (3rd century; including a swimming pool); church of St. Ivan and St. Tudor (11th century); the residence of the bishop (12th century); a palace with decorated baroque scenes (near the pier; 15th century); church Madonna of Graces (15th-17th century); the fortified gothic summer palace (15th-16th century); Dominican monastery (peninsula Glavica; 15th century; its museum has a rich archeological collection and diverse valuable objects and paintings); the house of the Jeličić family (17th century); the renaissance-baroque palace (17th century; with the worthy art gallery “Branislav Deskovic” of contemporary art); church Madonna of Karmel (18th century).

Info – tourist Mecca and the leading tourist destination of Croatian Adriatic; one of the most popular resorts for windsurfing (extraordinary good winds); sources of drinking water; many beautiful beaches, among them Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn; protected as a unique geomorphological phenomenon; total length of some 15 km; gravelly pebbled beach; stretches into the open sea (nearly half km) in the shape of a tongue, with its tip changing the form and side, according to the direction of winds, waves and gentle sea currents; a rumor has it that this is the only beach in the world that runs vertical to the coast); 1 661 inhabitants; above Bol is a mountain range “Bol Crown” with the highest peak on the island Mount of St. Vid, 778 m (by whom is the Brač the highest island in the Adriatic Sea); Bol organizes WTA Croatian Bol Ladies Open and offers 25 tennis courts; Bol received numerous recognitions and awards (for invested efforts and accomplishments in development of tourist and service quality).

Happenings: Bol Cultural Summer (the guest performances by well-known theaters, concerts of prominent opera singers, renowned musicians, popular singers and local cultural groups, Dalmatian klapa (a cappella singing), art exhibitions).

Where to go out: restaurants, café bars, discotheques, nightclubs, cocktails bars with lot of dance floors.

Inevitable to see: Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn; protected as a unique geomorphological phenomenon; the most beautiful gravelly pebbled beach in Croatia); Dragon’s cave and its reliefs (in Murvice; the first-class monument of the cave monastery life of Glagolitic priests in the 15th century).

Inevitable to taste: the Brac lambs that have not yet tasted grass; local specialties (vitalac; butalac; janjeci tingul; lamb in “teca”); exquisite wines of Brac (the famous “Bolski Plavac”); Dalmatian prosciutto; Brac cheese; Procip (made of fresh cheese, not older than 24 hours, which is cut into slices and baked in caramelized sugar); a traditional drink smutica (4/5 of fresh goat’s milk and 1/5 of red wine; legend tells that it was recommended by Hippocrates himself); olive oil (Brač is the biggest producer in Dalmatia).

Good to know: there is a wine cellar in Bol with a capacity of 150 wagons.
