Airport and transport – a catamaran (from Milna) and a ferry (from Supetar) to Split (around 15 km) and Makarska (around 10 km); Airport Brac (from Milna 35 km); regular bus connections between all the villages of the island.
History – (see Island Brač); the village was developed in the 16th century (when an aristocratic family decided to build a fortress and a church); during 17th century was the island’s administrative center (some of the most beautiful buildings and paintings on the island can be found here).
Interesting to see: baroque parish church Lady of Annunciation (18th century; with the most beautiful altar on the island); ruins of the little Gothic church; little church of Saint Joseph.
Info – around 1000 inhabitants; it is very famous thanks to its bay (in 3rd century the fleet of the emperor Diocletian used it as a prime port during the building of Diocletian’s Palace in Split) and nowadays is one of the best marinas on the Adriatic (200 berths) and the safest harbor on the island (protected from all winds except from pleasant summer mistrals); offers beautiful coves with sand and gravel beaches.
